This asana helps in improving both the removal of carbon dioxide and the intake of oxygen. The heart is toned and strengthened by the massage it receives due to the increased pressure within the chest cavity. Let's look at how it's done: Lie flat on the stomach with the legs straight and the feet together. This is the starting position.
Interlock the fingers behind your body and place the hands-on top of your hips
Place the chin on the floor
Using the lower back muscles, raise the chest as much as possible from the floor
Push the hands further back and raise the arms as high as possible
Imagine the arms are being pulled from behind
Raise the body as high as possible without straining
Squeeze the shoulder blades together and look forward
Hold for as long as is comfortable
Slowly return to the starting position and relax the whole body
Turn the head to one side
Repeat for the prescribed number of reps And that's how you do Sarpasana
Precautions: People suffering from peptic ulcer, hernia, intestinal tuberculosis or hyperthyroidism should avoid this asana.
